St Georges – Echocardiograms

St Georges Hospital

St Georges Hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK and one of the largest hospitals in Europe. St George's Hospital, a significant medical facility, boasts around 1,300 beds and is well-equipped to handle a broad spectrum of general tertiary care services. These include accident and emergency services, maternity care, and specialised treatments for older adults and children. Beyond these general services, St George's is distinguished for its expertise in managing more complex medical conditions. It serves as a crucial centre for trauma, neurology, cardiac care, renal transplantation, cancer treatment, and stroke management.

St Georges Hospital

In December 2019 St George’s Hospitals required additional capacity for recording and reporting transthoracic echocardiograms to support backlog recovery. Support was required for both adult inpatient, paediatric patients and neonate patients.

We provided the Trust with a team of very senior BSE accredited Cardiac Physiologists. We have supported the Trust since January 2020 and have continued to help them maintain capacity to meet the number of referrals they receive and the 6-week diagnostic wait time target.

Currently we are providing them with week day and weekend support. At one stage we were providing them with physiologists to support 9 rooms across two sites per day.

ES provides a flexible service to our customers. When the hospital has a reduction in need or an influx of referrals, we reduce or increase capacity for them accordingly, subject to availability of staff.

To date we have given the Trust capacity for over 40,000 outpatient echocardiograms. The majority of of patients were adult cases, but the ES team also saw paediatric and neonatal patients.
