Blackpool Victoria Hospital - Endoscopy
Blackpool Victoria Hospital (BVH), part of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is a good example of Elective Services having the capacity to meet fluctuating demands for different medical specialities. Blackpool Victoria Hospital is a large acute hospital within North West England (approximately 5 hours drive from London) which serves a catchment area of 352,000. The hospital has 767 beds and provides a comprehensive range of acute and specialist services. The hospital has a very busy endoscopy unit which comprises five endoscopy rooms.
Blackpool Victoria Hospital approached Elective Services seeking assistance with their endoscopy recovery program following the first COVID-19 national lockdown. Elective Services was commissioned in October 2020 to provide weekly weekend endoscopy insourcing services for two rooms. For each endoscopy session, ES has been providing a team of 12 staff (which includes Consultants, Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Decontamination Technicians). Most referrals have been for Colonoscopies but typical lists would also include Flexible Sigmoidoscopies and Gastroscopies. The success of our endoscopy services resulted in Elective Services being subsequently approached to support outpatient activity, to meet the challenges emerging from the pandemic (clinics commenced October 2021).
Quality assurance
The colonoscopy performance of our high quality experienced Endoscopists, 30/3/21-30/3/22, were above important quality standards/key performance indicators as set out by the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy and the British Society of Gastroenterology. In total 1455 colonoscopies were performed.
